This dissertation explores the phenomenon that occurred within the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification (FFWPU) after the seonghwa (ascension) of True Father, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, in 2012. Upon True Mother, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon, assuming the central leadership role, educators and leaders felt challenged to follow her vision and direction, resulting in a negative phenomenon toward her leadership and uncertainty of faith. Using Grounded Theory methodology and eleven in-depth interviews with FFWPU leaders, educators, and associates, the study examines how views of True Mother changed before and after True Father's Seonghwa, and what actions participants took to develop a new faith understanding of her. The research found that observing the actions and words of a chosen exemplar, practicing jeongseong (devotion), and learning truth from both the spiritual and physical realms were essential to strengthening faith, and identifies three participant types and three emergent themes, including the recognition that "We Did Not Know True Mother Completely."
